Tool-port to hose adapters explained
An adapter's whole job is to bridge two different sizes, so choosing one comes down to knowing the exact size at the tool end and at the hose end.
An adapter has two ends to match
Every adapter connects a tool port on one side to a hose on the other. Both ends have to seal, so you need two measurements: the tool's dust port diameter, and the hose's connector size. A generic adapter marked to fit several sizes usually does so through a stepped cone that fits whichever size it seats against.
This is why a single adapter is often described by a range, such as fitting 1.25 to 2.5 inch, rather than one size. The stepped cone lets it seat at different diameters.
Friction fit versus threaded
Most tool-to-hose connections are friction, or push, fits: one part slides over or inside the other and holds by grip. A snug friction fit is airtight enough for extraction. Some systems, notably Festool, add a bayonet or thread so the hose locks on and will not pull off.
For a push fit, a small overlap and a wrap of tape make a reliable seal. Where a tool is used a lot, a locking connection is worth the small extra cost to stop the hose creeping off under the weight of the cable.
Stepped and universal cones
A stepped or universal adapter is a cone of concentric rings, each a common size, that you cut down to the ring you need or simply push on until it seats. These are cheap and cover a wide range of tools, and they are the fastest way to connect an odd tool port to a standard hose.
The downside is that a cut-down cone can leak if the ring you land on is a poor match, so measure the port first and choose a cone whose rings include your exact size.
Choosing the right adapter
Measure the tool port and the hose end, note whether each is an inner or outer diameter, and pick an adapter that matches both. If the two ends are far apart in size, a reducer or a short length of stepped hose may be needed as well. The goal is a firm, near-airtight joint at both ends so suction reaches the cut.
