Reducing and stepping fittings explained

A reducer changes a duct from one diameter to another, which is often necessary but never free: every step down trades away some airflow.

What a reducer does

A reducer, sometimes called a stepped fitting, joins two ducts of different sizes. A 4 inch to 2.5 inch reducer lets a 4 inch collector duct branch to a 2.5 inch tool port. Reducers come as simple sleeves for push fits and as moulded fittings for permanent runs.

The concentric or stepped reducer, a cone of rings, is the flexible version: it seats at whichever ring matches, so one part serves several sizes. A fixed reducer is neater and seals better for a run that will not change.

Every reduction costs airflow

Narrowing a duct raises the air speed but lowers the volume the system can move, so each reduction cuts airflow at the tool. Reducing too early in a run, or reducing more than the tool needs, starves the extraction. Keep the duct at its full diameter as close to the tool as possible, and reduce only at the last moment.

A gradual, tapered reducer loses less than an abrupt step, because the air is not forced to change speed all at once. Where airflow is tight, a smooth taper is worth choosing over a sharp shoulder.

Stepping up and blast gates

You can also step up, from a narrow tool port to a wider hose, though this is less common and offers no airflow gain beyond the narrowest point in the path. In a branched system, blast gates close off the runs not in use so the extractor's airflow concentrates on the tool that is running.

The narrowest point in the whole path sets the ceiling on airflow, so there is no benefit in a wide duct feeding a tool through a much narrower port.

Choosing a reducer

Note the two diameters you need to join and whether each is an inner or outer measurement. Pick a reducer that seats firmly on both, prefer a gradual taper where airflow matters, and reduce as late in the run as possible. For a system used with many tools, a stepped cone gives flexibility; for a fixed run, a moulded reducer seals best.
