Anti-static dust extraction hose explained

Dry dust rushing through a plastic hose generates a static charge, and anti-static hose is designed to bleed that charge away safely before it becomes a nuisance or a hazard.

Why static builds up

As fine, dry dust particles rub against the wall of a plastic hose and against each other, they transfer charge, the same effect that makes a balloon cling to a wall. In a long hose moving a lot of dry dust, this charge accumulates on the hose and can discharge as a small spark or an uncomfortable shock when you touch the hose or the tool.

The charge builds fastest with the finest, driest dust and the longest hose runs, which is why sanding and routing through a long hose are the classic conditions for a static build-up.

What anti-static hose does

Anti-static hose has a conductive path, usually a copper wire or a conductive compound in the plastic, running along its length. Connected to earth, this path bleeds the charge away continuously so it never builds to a noticeable shock. Festool and several others build this conductive element into their hoses as standard.

For the conductive path to work it must be earthed, either through an earthed extractor and tool or through a grounding point, so simply owning anti-static hose is not enough if the path is left floating.

Does the shock matter

For a hobby workshop the main effect is a mildly unpleasant shock and dust clinging to the hose. The serious concern is in commercial or high-volume settings where large quantities of fine combustible dust move through metal ducting, where static is one factor considered in fire and explosion risk assessments.

For most hand-tool users the practical benefit of anti-static hose is comfort and cleaner hoses rather than a safety necessity, but it is a worthwhile upgrade where shocks are frequent.

Choosing and earthing a hose

If static shocks are a nuisance, choose a hose described as anti-static or with an integral conductive wire, and make sure the conductive path is connected to earth at the extractor. A plain, cheap hose can be improved by running a bare wire along or inside it to an earth point, though a purpose-made anti-static hose is tidier and more reliable.
